Summary of findings
With our experiment, we can say that the distance does affect the radioactivity of Americium-241. The greater the distance between the Geiger counter and the radioactive source, the smaller the readings. When the results were plotted on a graph, it was observed that the graph was not nicely fit. The reasons for this is explained in the areas for improvement section.
With our experiment, we believe Americium- 241 will be useful for space travel. Since it has a very long half-life of about 432 years, it can actually be used to power rockets and satellites in space for years to come. This is provided if a sizeable amount of americium-241 is used and that sufficient safety measures have been taken to ensure the safety of astronauts, which requires further study.
Areas for further study
Further research can be done on how other factors affect radioactive particles that have been emitted such as how magnetic fields, temperature and chemical environment. More research can also be done on Beta particles or Gamma rays.
